Claude Mangin suspends hunger strike

PUSL.- Claude mangin, french citizen and wife of Saharawi political prisoner Naama Asfari suspended yesterday the hunger strike that started on 17 April.

This 62 years old teacher saw herself obliged to make a hunger strike to make the French authorities put in action the the diplomatic channels in order to be allowed to enter in Morocco to see her husband.

A difficult decision and an action which Mangin resorted to after 4 expulsions in the last two years, period during which she didn’t was allowed to see the spouse.

Yesterday, Claude Mangin suspended the hunger strike since the French government is in negotiations at the highest level with Morocco and MP Jean Paul Lecoq asked on Tuesday in the French national parliament French that Claude suspend the strike.

One of the objectives of the striker was undoubtedly achieved, the French government, the members of the European parliament and hundreds of organizations and personalities appealed to the Moroccan government to allow Claude to visit her husband.

French Government in support of Claude Mangin, wife of Saharawi political prisoner

PUSL.- After almost a month of the hunger strike of Claude Mangin, wife of the Saharawi activist Naama Asfari, the government and the French president asked Morocco to reconsider the ban on entry of this French citizen into Moroccan territory.

France now asks Morocco to let the French citizen visit her husband, a human rights activist who defends the independence of Western Sahara, and according to official statements by Jean-Yves Le Drian, head of French diplomacy on 15 May, follow “Very close” the hunger strike of Claude Mangin, a 62-year-old teacher.

On Tuesday Jean-Yves Le Drian told the French National Assembly in response to questions from Mr Jean-Paul Lecoq of the PCF that “the Moroccan authorities were contacted several times about Ms. Mangin’s case to allow her to travel to Morocco to visit her husband.

“I spoke several times, not only officially, but also personally with my Moroccan colleague,” said French Foreign Minister.

SOGAPS – Galicia asks Macron to intervene so that Claude Mangin can visit her husband Naama Asfari

In a letter addressed to the President of the French Republic, Mr Emmanuel Macron, Solidarity Galega Co Pobo Saharaui (SOGAPS-Galicia), calls on presideny Macron to intervene in order for the Moroccan authorities to allow Mrs. Mangin to enter Morocco and visit her husband , the Saharawi political prisoner of the Gdeim Izik Group, Naama Asfari.

Claude decided to go on hunger strike on April 18 so that her right to visit her husband Naama, currently detained in Kenitra prison in Morocco is granted.

National Union of the Saharawi Women  appeals to Macron

The UNMS ( National Union of the Saharawi Women ) sent a letter to the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, calling on his intervention so that the Moroccan authorities allow Claude Mangin to visit her husband Naama Asfari political prisoner detained in Morocco.

Personalities appeal to Macron supporting Claude Mangin in her 17th day of hunger strike

An appeal that already has over 200 signatures from artists, lawyers, politicians and members of various associations addressed to Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, supporting Claude Mangin-Asfari , a French citizen on hunger strike since April 18thto obtain again her right to visit her husband in jail in Morocco, was launched yesterday.

Amongst the personalities is the well-known Spanish actor Javier Bardem, but also MEP’s and deputies of different political scoops.

The basic right of Claude Mangin to see her husband , Naama Asfari who is a Saharawi political prisoner of  the Gdeim Izik Group, has been denied for two years by the Moroccan authorities who do not let the French citizen enter the country.

This entry refusal amounts to a ban on her husband’s visit, which is a serious violation of her basic right to a private and family life, which is contrary to international humanitarian law.

International Solidarity with Claude Mangin

On April 23, Claude Mangin, on hunger strike since April 18 demanding the right to visit her husband Naama Asfari, a political prisoner of Gdeim Izik, was visited by Aida Ohanyan of Armenia on behalf of the Association Bonheur Retrouvé, Constance Machicote international jurist from France / Spain and Isabel Lourenço from Portugal representing the Western Sahara Foundation and porunsaharalibre.org.

All three activists declared their solidarity with Claude Mangin and stated their rejection of the action of the Moroccan government in preventing this French citizen from visiting her husband who was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Wife of Saharawi political prisoner on hunger strike after 4th expulsion from Morocco


Claude Mangin, wife of Naama Asfari, a political prisoner of the group of Gdeim izik, sentenced to 30 years and currently detained in Kenitra, started today a hunger strike demanding respect for the right to visit her husband which has been denied since October 2016.

According to the statement by Claude Mangin-Asfari, her greatest desire is “to return to Morocco to see my husband Naama Asfari, a Saharawi political prisoner, sentenced to 30 years in prison after two unfair trials together with his comrades of the Gdeim Izik group for his peaceful struggle for the independence of Western Sahara, which has been occupied by Morocco for more than 40 years. ”

Naama received the Human Rights Award granted by the ACAT Foundation for Human Dignity in January of this year. The UN Committee against Torture in Geneva has condemned Morocco for the torture of Naama Asfari in December 2016.

However, since October 2016, that Claude Mangin is not allowed to enter Morocco.
