Brahim Ghali informed the UN Secretary General about the destruction of the last stockpile of landmines stored by the Polisario Front
New York, January 10, 2019 (SPS) – The President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali informed the UN Secretary General about the destruction of the last arsenal of land mines stored by the Polisario Front.
Brahim Ghali added, in his letter, that “The destruction of the arsenal of landmines is a clear sign of the Polisario Front’s willingness to collaborate in the cleanup of the landmines that sow terror, especially in the liberated part of Western Sahara” .
In addition, the President of the Republic has expressed his hope that the international community will exert sufficient pressure on Morocco to sign the Ottawa Convention on the prohibition of the use and storage of anti-personnel mines and cluster munitions.
In the same context, Brahim Ghali conveyed his deep concern about the serious situation of Saharawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons, especially the group of Gdeim Izik that suffers, like the rest of the prisoners, ill-treatment, torture and humiliation and is deprived of its elementary rights because of the policy of repression exercised by the Moroccan occupier.
The President of the Republic addressed, in his letter, the latest events, especially those related to the round table held in Geneva at the beginning of December and the constructive collaboration of the Polisario Front in this meeting, where he proposed interesting proposals to consolidate confidence-building measures, such as allow international observers and human rights organizations to visit the occupied areas of Western Sahara and the release of Saharawi political prisoners.
On the other hand, Brahim Ghali expressed his concern about the situation in the conflict zone and warned that any incursion of the Moroccan occupation forces into the separation zone, in El Guergarat would constitute a clear violation of the ceasefire and the Military Agreement number 1.
