Presse Release
Sahrawi diaspora organizations in Europe and inFrance in particular, as well assolidarity based associations, organizations and people supporting the Sahrawis in France, Europe and Africa gathered on October 12. 2019, a day that commemorates Sahrawi national unity. This 12th of October still symbolizesthe Sahrawis’ commitment to and confidence in their sole and legitimate Representative, the Polisario Front, for the implementation of self-determination and the completion of their freedom and independence. This rally was held at Place de la République that also symbolizes the values of a republican France committed to the defense of freedom and respect for human rights.
1. The participants have called on France to play a positive role in the resolution of the Western Sahara conflict by ceasing to favor the point of view of Morocco, thus encouraging the latter to keep preventing self-determination.With this position, France participates in the non-organization of the referendum of self-determination promised to Sahrawis since 1991.
2. The participantshave underscored the urgency to provide the UN mission with the prerogatives that would enableit to monitor the human rights in Western Sahara.Indeed, these rights are repeatedly violated by the Kingdom of Morocco, the occupying power, while being regularly denounced by all humanitarian NGOs and human rights associations at the international level.By refusing this mandate, France as a member of the UN Security Council can be held responsible for the cruel treatments, torture and imprisonments of Sahrawi civilians.
3. The participants have also denounced the decision of the European Union, where France is a leading voice, to renew the trade agreements with Morocco in violation of the European law defined by the three decisions of the European Court of Justice, the CJEU, in2016 and 2018 which recall the Sahrawi people’s sovereignty over theirnatural resources by conditioning all economic activity to their consent.
4. The gathered people have saluted the courage of the Moroccan people who are fighting on many fronts to defend their fundamental rights such as the aspiration to a dignified and decent life and to eventually live in a genuine democracy. They deeply regret that the Moroccan regime has developed chauvinism for 45 years and cultivated a false antagonism between two peoples, the Moroccan people and the Sahrawi people, while their only aspiration should be to cooperate in peace, in a spirit of good neighborliness and mutual respect.
As a conclusion, the Sahrawis have chosen peaceful resistance and invested themselves wisely in full cooperation with the UN and its on-site MINURSO mission. What have they gained in return? The non-recognition of their rights!, a result of the negligence and lack of sufficient political will of the UN and the blind alignment of France on Moroccan the Moroccan expansionist policies. We want peace, we have proven it all these years in an exemplary way. Do not push us towards war that will only exacerbate the regional situation. The time has come for France to become part of the solution instead of remaining part of the problem.
