On Wednesday, November 27, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) of the acting Government of Pedro Sánchez issued a statement advising Spanish citizens not to travel to Saharawi refugee camps due to hypothetical security threats that could be caused by ” growing instability in northern Mali. “

It is noteworthy that this statement was issued immediately after a meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain, Josep Borrel, and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita and a few days before the celebration of the Polisario Front Congress in Tindouf, an event that will bring together in the refugee camps numerous organizations and people in solidarity with the cause of the independence of the Saharawi people.

The announcement of the MAE was made without prior notice to Jira Bulahi, delegate of the Polisario in Spain, who has denounced that she has learned from the press release of the Spanish Ministry, giving an account of the alleged “threat”. On the other hand, none of the organizations present in the camps is aware of an increase in risks or threats in the area and the Polisario Front has announced that there is no extraordinary risk in Tindouf.

For the Communist Party of Spain, this way of proceeding from the Spanish Foreign Ministry is due to an unfortunate follow-up to the Moroccan regime by Spain’s foreign policy regarding the Sahara, a follow-up in which Sánchez’s Government should not fall.

For the PCE, the MAE statement in practice has the effect of boycotting the imminent Congress of the Polisario Front in the Liberated Territories, in which important issues will be discussed related to Morocco’s breach of the United Nations plan for the celebration of the Sahara self-determination referendum and the end of the Moroccan occupation. It can also have the effect that humanitarian organizations interrupt their work in refugee camps and leave the area, thereby reducing humanitarian support to refugees in Tindouf, in addition to contributing to the destabilization of an area that is located in one of the most stable countries in the Maghreb such as Algeria.

The Communist Party of Spain understands that the information issued by the MAE of Spain lacks a solid foundation and has been issued irresponsibly following false information intentionally transferred by Morocco with the intention of destabilizing the area and boycotting the Polisario Front Congress.

Faced with this situation, the PCE announces that it will send, as it had planned from the beginning, a representation to the Polisario Congress and calls for the rest of the organizations and parties that were going to attend the Congress to continue with their participation.

It requires the Government of Spain to implement its own policy of support for the self-determination of the Saharawi people, far from the interests of France and the illegal Moroccan occupation, and denounce the situation of the Saharawi refugee camps as well as the persecution, repression and arbitrary detentions by the Moroccan regime of the saharawi who defend and fight for the legitimate right to self-determination of the Sahara.
