Vote No. 123 / XIV / 1st
Vote of condemnation for the expulsion of Portuguese activist Isabel Lourenço from Western Sahara

On 10 December, Isabel Lourenço, a human rights activist, was expelled from the occupied territories of Western Sahara by the authorities of the Kingdom of Morocco. Isabel Lourenço had a valid passport and wanted to speak with family members of Mansour El Moussaui, 19, and his 34-year-old cousin Mahfouda Lefkir – who was sentenced to 6 months in prison and a fine of 2,000. dirham for shouting at the end of his cousin’s trial, inside the courtroom, against the Moroccan occupation and against the injustice of the trial.

At El Aiune Airport, Isabel Lourenço, despite meeting all legal entry requirements, was classified by the Moroccan authorities as a persona non grata who was trying to attack the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco. The activist also saw her computer and cell phones unconfigured forcibly, was prevented from making any calls and sent unwillingly to Agadir by a collective taxi.

In view of these facts, the Assembly of the Republic can only express its concern about the limitations imposed by the authorities of the Kingdom of Morocco on the action of human rights activists and their organizations in Western Sahara and the isolation that is imposed on Saharawi political prisoners. These facts also demonstrate the urgency of reaching a just and lasting solution for Western Sahara, which, while ensuring respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law, guarantees the realization of the right to self-determination of the Saharawi people.

Thus, the Assembly of the Republic, meeting in plenary, expresses its condemnation for the expulsion of Isabel Lourenço, Portuguese activist, from the occupied territories of Western Sahara and calls on the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco to respect the fundamental rights of human rights activists, Saharawi political prisoners and the Saharawi people in general.
