Webinar with former special representative of the UN Secretary, Francesco Bastagli

PUSL.- Solidarity Rising is organizing next Saturday, 9th of May, a Webinar with former special representative of the UN Secretary General, Francesco Bastagli, who will be speaking on the UN involvement in Western Sahara, the politics of a failure, his personal experience, MINURSO and beyond. Bastagli will also cover the continued centrality of the United Nations and options for a way forward. The session will consist of a lecture by Mr. Bastagli on the topic followed by questions and discussion.

Francesco Bastagli was special representative of the UN secretary-general for Western Sahara and head of MINURSO between 2005 and 2006. Before that he was responsible for civil administration in the UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo. Between 1999 and 2002 he was United Nations resident coordinator in Iran. Prior to that appointment Bastagli was a director at the UN office on drugs and crime and chief of the executive office of the UN Relief Agency for Palestine Refugees. In his UN career he also dealt with refugee assistance in Central America and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Between 2014 and 2015 Bastagli was head of the European Union Border Assistance Mission in Moldova and Ukraine.

Mr. Bastagli lectures on international peace and security. His commentaries have appeared in The International Herald Tribune, Foreign Policy and The New Republic, among others.
