Brussels, The 24th June, 2020.On June 24th, the European Coordination of the committees of solidarity with the SahrawiPeople (EUCOCO) and the delegation of the Polisario Front for Europe organized a videoconference about the political question of Western Sahara under Moroccan occupation since 45 years. This conference belongs to a triptych started in Rome the 30th May to treat the humanitarian question and the creation of the Sahrawi State. This conference was followed to another organized in Paris on the 5th June relating to the situation of the Sahrawi political prisoners in the occupied territories.
Several important speakers joined this meeting: Oubi Bouchraya, Ambassador of the S.A.D.R. permanent mission to the European Institutions, Pierre Galand, President of the EUCOCO, Joachim Schuster, President of the parliamentary group “Western Sahara” of the European Parliament, Francesco Bastagli, former special Envoy of the Secretary General of the United Nations in the Western Sahara, Gilles Devers, Lawyer of the Polisario Front in the Court of Justice of the European Union, Carlos Ruiz, professor of international law of the University of Santiago de Compostela, and Nasir Fagge, professor of economy of the University of Kanu.
After having analyzed and having discussed the evolution of the Sahrawi question within the great international institutions (United Nations, African Union and European Union), the speakers called the Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Guterres, to designate a new special Envoy as soon as possible. The speakers insisted on the importance to continue the negotiations process started under the auspices of the United Nations for the implementation of the inalienable right to self-determination of Sahrawi People, the end of the Moroccan occupation and the release of all political prisoners.
The speakers condemned the disturbing and delaying actions of Morocco aiming withdrawing themselves from their international obligations, limiting a lot the process of decolonization of the Western Sahara. They reminded to the Spanish Government its responsibilities in order to bring the decolonization of the Western Sahara to its end and to recognize the rights of Sahrawi People to build their own State, as already the African Union did.
The speakers denounced the pro-Moroccan political line of the Commission of the European Union in this conflict which opposes the Polisario Front to Morocco, occupation power. The speakers asked to the European institutions to respect the relevant decisions of the European Court of Justice concerning the EU-Morocco partnership Agreements, decisions which specify that the Western Sahara is a distinct territory from Morocco.
All participants reaffirmed their support of the legitimate claims of Sahrawi People and pointed out the urgency of the respect by the UN Security Council of promises to lead to its end the process of decolonization of the Western Sahara. Finally the movement of solidarity will continue its action of international mobilization supporting the inalienable rights of the Sahrawi People in this period when all Africa commemorates the end of colonialism.
