Berlin (dts news agency) – The unilateral recognition of the Moroccan claim to the territory of the Western Sahara by the USA has met with criticism in the federal government. “We reject recognition at the expense of one side,” said the State Minister in the Foreign Office, Niels Annen (SPD), the “Spiegel”.

The outgoing Trump administration recently presented a map of Morocco on which the disputed area under international law belongs to the kingdom. “This is in contradiction to the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council,” said Annen. The recognition was apparently the price for the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Morocco, promoted by the outgoing US president. It is wrong to “abandon 30 years of US policy towards Western Sahara for a quick foreign policy victory”, criticized Trump’s former security advisor John Bolton. The normalization of relations between Morocco and Israel is good news, said Annen. “But that doesn’t change the fact that the status of Western Sahara under international law is still unclear.” Germany has been committed to a political solution to the conflict for many years. At the initiative of the German government, the UN Security Council debated the Western Sahara conflict last Monday – but without any result.
