PUSL.- At today’s meeting of the “Western Sahara Intergroup” of the European Parliament, SPÖ-EU (Austria) delegation leader Andreas Schieder was elected as the new chairman of this intergroup.
The Intergroup includes 75 MEPs from five different political groups – EPP, S&D, Greens, Renew and GUE / NGL. In the official webpage of SPÖ we can read Andreas Schieder comments:
“The Western Sahara conflict has been smoldering for over 40 years. And the Saharawi population has lived just as long under Moroccan occupation and under partially intolerable humanitarian conditions. The UN and the EU must no longer forget about the people of Western Sahara. As chairman of the Western Sahara Intergroup in the EU Parliament, I will work to ensure that the EU leads international efforts to resolve the conflict. To do this, we absolutely have to increase the pressure on Morocco, for example when it comes to economic aid or fishing rights. The illegal occupation and settlement policy must end. The UN mission MINURSO to monitor the human rights situation in Western Sahara is to be expanded for a sustainable settlement of the conflict. In addition, we must finally launch a referendum on self-determination for the Saharawi people. “
