PUSL.- In a press statement Josep Borrell, Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security confirmed that the EU position on this issue is unchanged and supports a solution within the framework of the UN.
Im his statement Borrell says that he cannot go beyond stating the official position of the EU since Spain’s new position hasn’t been discussed at the Council level.
According to Borrell the solution to the conflict needs to the agreement of the parties within the framework of UN resolutions.
Regarding the Spanish governments letter to the Moroccan King, Mr. Borrell affirms, also states the same and so he is of the opinion that Spain’s new position does not contradict the EU’s, it merely states a preference for one of the options.
Sofar, the content of the entire letter and the letter itself has not been made public and all statements are based on the parts stated by the Moroccan authorities in their statement about the visit.
This lack of transparency ifrom Spanish government has been contested by the Spanish politicians both on the left and right of the PSOE and it is still to be clarified exactly what Spain promissed Morocco and what are the counter promises from Morocco.
