ehbildu.eus.- The joint initiative presented this Thursday by the pro-sovereignty groups urges Congress to ratify its support for the UN resolutions and the United Nations Mission for the referendum in Western Sahara, with the “conviction that only dialogue, negotiation and the agreement carried out in a constructive manner and in accordance with International Law, will help to reach a just, realistic, viable, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution in the Sahara».
After the Spanish Government unilaterally modified its position in relation to the Western Sahara conflict, in contravention of United Nations resolutions and International Law itself, EH Bildu and ERC have presented an initiative to Congress to request a referendum in Western Sahara that will force the PSOE to rectify itself.
Both formations believe that the new position of the Government “supposes de facto supporting the path proposed by Morocco”, abandoning the basis of a political solution that is mutually acceptable, as stated in the UN resolutions. EH Bildu and ERC also denounce that the decision has been adopted unilaterally and without counting on anyone: “This decision has been made without consulting or sharing it with any of the political groups in Congress and contravening the majority consensus of the Chamber ».
Economic and energy consequences
In addition to representing a change in the historical position maintained until now, the Government’s decision may trigger diplomatic consequences with Western Sahara itself, Algeria and Morocco. The pro-independence groups believe that a decision of such political significance “cannot be adopted with its back to the majority will of Congress” and without the expected transparency in decisions of such political and social importance. “The possible consequences in the economic and energy field that this decision could entail should not be forgotten either,” they warn.
EH Bildu and ERC advocate for a dialogue solution to unravel the conflict and reaffirm their support for the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination: “The political path to resolve the conflict between Western Sahara and the kingdom of Morocco based on the various resolutions of The UN that advocates a negotiated and satisfactory solution for the parties promoted by MINURSO, today has the endorsement of international and European institutions, as well as the social and political majority represented in this Chamber.
