Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), 30 April 2022 (SPS). The Sahrawi Republic through its Sahrawi Ambassador to Ethiopia, Permanent Representative to the African Union, Lamman Baali, has called on the African Union to take action to put an end to the brutal repression unleashed by Morocco in the Occupied Areas of Western Sahara.
During a meeting with the Vice Chairperson of the African Union Commission Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa, at the African Commission headquarters in Addis Ababa, the Saharawi diplomat said that the human rights situation in the occupied part of the Saharawi Republic is alarming and unsustainable.
In the face of persistent campaigns of reprisals, SADR calls on the African Union to intervene quickly to save the defenceless Saharawi civilians from the oppression of the Moroccan occupying forces.
The meeting with the Rwandan economist, addressed the latest political and diplomatic developments in the Saharawi question, in particular the results of the last meeting of the UN Security Council, which discussed the report of the UN envoy to Western Sahara, Mr Staffan de Mistura, on 20 April. 2022.
The Saharawi delegate also spoke of the recent reactions on the Spanish scene from the Spanish political forces and society, following the recent position of the Spanish Prime Minister.
Following this new turn in Spanish politics, the Polisario Front suspended its contacts with the current Spanish government.
According to Spanish experts, this stance of the Spanish government skips the role that Spain should have played as a de jure power, and goes against international legality, the Spanish constitution itself and Spanish institutions.
In addition to popular pressure, Sánchez had to contend with opposition to this stance from within the government and his own party. The EU and the UN have also expressed their rejection of the new turn in Spanish policy.
