(SPS)- At his morning press conference on 7 November, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador again showed his full support for the Sahrawi people and their right to self-determination.
“We have the same policy of self-determination for the peoples,” he said, recalling that Mexico has recognised the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic since 1979.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is dealing with this issue. And if necessary, Mexico, through its foreign policy, will make a statement,” he said in response to questions from journalists.

Questioned directly on whether his support for the Sahrawi Republic is “firm”, the Mexican stated categorically that “Yes”, that it is a state policy with continuity over time: “(support) has already been expressed since the 1970s, it will continue with the same policy”.
Mexico was the second Latin American country to establish relations with SADR, with which it maintains historic diplomatic relations; the Saharawi embassy in Mexico is one of the most important in the region. Mexican support for self-determination is a position maintained by the go7 Novembervernments of successive parties in power.
