CHAHID EL HAFED, 04 September 2023 (SPS). The POLISARIO Front leadership has warned of the tightening of the military siege imposed on the occupied Sahrawi towns and the deployment of more police and security forces in several Sahrawi towns during the visit of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura.
The Polisario Front in a press release issued by the Ministry of Information of the Saharawi Republic on the occasion of the visit of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Western Sahara to the Saharawi Occupied Areas, holds the occupying state responsible for the repression and escalation it may undertake during the visit of the UN envoy, and asks the Security Council and the UN Secretary General to assume their responsibilities in the protection of the defenceless Saharawi citizens.
Morocco, with the support and acquiescence of France, continues to act with impunity and with its colonial practices and its attempts to impose the policy of fait accompli by force in occupied Western Sahara ,continues to disperse peaceful protests in the occupied Saharawi cities and to restrict the activities of Saharawi human rights organisations, and has intensified repression against Saharawi activists, unleashed a frenzied campaign of repression, persecution and harassment of human rights activists and their families and raids on their homes.
In the face of this declared campaign of reprisals, the Polisario Front also hopes that De Mistura’s visit will encourage the establishment of an independent and permanent UN mechanism to protect human rights and provide regular and field reports on the situation in the region to the relevant UN bodies.
The Front’s leadership continues to insist on international, legal and moral responsibility towards the people of Western Sahara.
