mapmaghrebine.- Sahrawi refugee camps, 3 October 2023 – An Italian medical mission specialising in the prevention and treatment of diabetes presented an in-depth study on Monday, 2 October 2023, on diabetes and its side effects on people’s health and on ways to fight and live with it in the Sahrawi refugee camps.
The Italian medical mission, under the supervision of Mrs. Maya Ali Muhammad Mouloud, head of the Central Department of Chronic Diseases at the Ministry of Health RASD, started working visits to some clinics in the Wilaya of Auserd (Zouk, Lakouira and Mijek). During these visits, the mission met with the local health teams as well as the regional coordinators of the Central Department of Chronic Diseases in order to deepen and disseminate the findings of the study.
The conclusions of the study showed that diabetes is an increasing disease in the Sahrawi refugee camps, with an incidence that has doubled in the last 10 years. The disease has a significant impact on people’s health, causing a number of complications, including cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and blindness.
The Italian medical mission’s outreach and orientation programme aims to spread awareness about diabetes and its side effects. The lectures the mission is holding in Algeria will help improve knowledge of the disease and promote healthy lifestyle behaviours to prevent or live with it.
The medical mission programme is part of the annual programme of the Central Department of Chronic Diseases in coordination with the Africa 70 organisation. The Italian mission is the first of a series of medical missions that will be organised in Algeria in the near future.
