Press Release MPT (Portugal): On the unsustainable situation of the Saharawi People

The Movement Party of the Earth (MPT), consistent with the values it advocates, reaffirms its solidarity with the Saharawi people and its legitimate representative, the Polisario Front, and its inalienable right to self-determination in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations, the African Union and the advisory opinion of the Court of The Hague  judgments of the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ), and condemns the illegal military occupation of a large part of the territory of Western Sahara by the Kingdom of Morocco, as well as the demographic change with the introduction of hundreds of thousands of settlers .

It is with particular concern that we see the inertia on the part of the international community in relation to this occupation, which has continued since 1975 and which did not end, as might be expected in 1991, with the signing of the cease-fire agreement whose premises have not been respected by Morocco, which consistently  has placed obstacles in the way of a referendum for self-determination, the only reason for the presence of a United Nations Mission in the field  for more than two decades and whose mandate does not include the protection of the Saharawi population.

The MPT has acted in the European Parliament for the defense of the Saharawi people, their rights and against the illegal exploitation of their natural resources. The vote on an amendment to the fisheries agreement that does not respect the judgments of the CJEU (Court of Justice of the European Union) is unacceptable to us and a precedent of breach of international law with grave consequences.

We are not fooled by green washing projects that are used to camouflage environmental atrocities such as the depletion of the region’s largest fossil water reserves, contamination of drinking water, and the existence of more than 9,000,000 antipersonnel mines placed by Morocco along the separation wall of more than 2720 km.

The serious violations of human rights in the occupied territories to which the Saharawi population is subjected by the Moroccan authorities, kidnapping, rape, torture, social, economic and political apartheid are contrary to the most basic human rights.

The dozens of Saharawi political prisoners kidnapped and detained in Moroccan territory are condemned by courts that do not respect Moroccan law itself or international law. The agreements and conventions ratified by Morocco are not put into practice to the point where the authorities ignore the decisions of the Committee against Torture.

We will therefore maintain our position and denounce this situation in the competent forums with the hope that the independence of the last colony of Africa can be achieved.

The President of the MPT National Political Commission
