PUSL.- In pursuing its International Relations and Cooperation objectives, the African National Congress (ANC) is informed by the Freedom Charter as adopted on the 26th of June 1955 wherein it states that: “There shall be Peace and Friendship.”
This principle is founded on the African Claims as adopted in 1943, and all our National Conference Resolutions which are predicated on International Solidarity as a pillar of the National Democratic Revolution (NDR).
Our view of the world is based on the founding principles of the Freedom Charter, namely: a world in which there is respect for the right to national sovereignty of all nations; and the pursuit of world peace and friendship, and not wars. As the ANC our strategic objective is ensure that we build a better Africa and the world that is free from the shackles of under-development, and the legacy of colonialism. As such, we will continue to advance our progressive internationalism and solidarity around the world.
Western Sahara
Our 54th National Conference noted that Western Sahara is the only remaining colony on the African continent, and further reaffirmed the inalienable right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence. Accordingly, we reaffirm our commitment to strengthen and intensify South Africa’s support for the Saharawi people in their quest for self-determination.
To this end, we commend the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) recent hosting (25 – 26 March 2019) of the SADC Solidarity Summit in Pretoria. Consistent with the UN’s and AU’s decisions to allow the people of Western Sahara to exercise their right to self-determination, this Summit signifies a milestone towards the advancement and reaffirmation of the right of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic to self-determination.
