The Spanish Foreign Minister receives approval to be head of European diplomacy

MADRID (Sputnik) – The still Spanish Foreign Minister, Josep Borrell, was approved by most European Parliament groups to become the next High Representative of the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy.

Borrell passed this October 7 the well-known ‘examination’ of the MEPs of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, who asked him for three hours on various issues in the international arena.

“Our colleague Josep Borrell was appointed High Representative of the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy. We want to indicate our satisfaction and pride that a socialist partner has such a high level career,” the Spanish socialists said in their social networks.

The Spanish politician will take office from November 1, after receiving great support from the chamber, with only the votes against from the ultra right, the Identity and Democracy group, where the French National Regrouping of Marine Le Pen or Matteo Salvini League are.

The European United Left considered not to oppose Borrell’s criteria but will be vigilant regarding issues to which they objected especially in the non-sale of weapons to countries in conflict, in compliance with the judgments of the Court of Justice of the Union European on Western Sahara, nuclear disarmament or recognition of the Palestinian State.

The senior official advocated “a truly integrated foreign policy” that unites the efforts of all member countries of the European Union, to “act together in the EU Council, with all the instruments and all policies managed by the European Commission and the democratic legitimacy of the European Parliament.”

Regarding the questions, the chancellor spoke before the European Parliament against the imposition of restrictions affecting the Venezuelan people, but he did call to keep the restrictions against Russia, and stressed the need for dialogue as much as possible.

In early July, EU leaders meeting in Brussels agreed on a list of candidates for the key positions of the European institutions.

The acting Spanish Foreign Minister, Josep Borrell, will replace the current head of European diplomacy, Federica Mogherini.
