AFCON – Boycotts and protests against the Futsal Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2020 to be held in occupied Western Sahara

PUSL.- The Futsal Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2020 that will be held from January 28th to Februrary 7th in El Aaiun, capital of occupied Western Sahara has been targeted with boycott and protests from South Africa and Algeria.

AFCON decided to ignore article 6 of the Fundamental Principles of Olympism, International Law, International Humanitarian Law and the constitutive act of the African Union in order to allow Moroccot o host the Futsal Africa Cup of Nations in the non autonomious territory of Western Sahara which it illegally occupies since 1975 and which is in the list for descolonizaion of the United Nations 4th Committee.

The South African squad announced that it will not take part in the 2020 African Futsal Cup of Nations (CAN) in El AAiun in Western Sahara from January 28 to February 7.

It is a boycott with diplomatic overtones.

It is the South African Football Federation (SAFA) itself which announced the package of its national futsal team for CAN 2020. The sports body explains this decision by the fact that “Morocco persists in organizing the tournament in El AAiun, which is located in the disputed Western Sahara “.

SAFA stresses that it is aware of the consequences of this boycott. “We are aware of the risk of a fine imposed by CAF and of the other repercussions following our decision,” said the press release.

The regulations of the African Football Confederation are clear. Any abandonment in the hurdy-gurdy of a competition is synonymous with suspension for the next two editions.

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has sent a letter to the President of the African Football Confederation (CAF) in which it denounces and opposes the domiciliation of CAN Futsal 2020 by Morocco in the occupied city of ElAAiun which is of the territory of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).

The FAF also informed that it will not take part in the festivities of the 63rd anniversary (next February 8) of CAF if it happens that it is invited, on the sidelines of the meeting of the Executive Committee of the body of African football.

SAFA reminds that it is worth remembering, CAF has always been at the forefront of universal values and had valiantly fought against all forms of colonization, starting with the apartheid regime in South Africa.

With this decision, with political overtones, the FAF considers that such an event advocates division within the CAF family.

Finally, the FAF requests that the domiciliation of the events cited above in the occupied city of El Aaiun be reconsidered, so as not to endorse the policy of the fait accompli, and reiterates its perfect position always in line with the virtues that Algeria has, always defended.
