Public statement

The Chilean Association of Friendship with the Democratic Saharawi Arab Republic (SADR) and the Committee of Friendship with the Saharawi People of Argentina strongly condemn the violation of the ceasefire by Morocco and support the legitimate response of the Saharawi Army in defense of Saharawi civilians in Guergarat.

The Chilean Association of Friendship with SADR and the Committee of Friendship with the Saharawi People of Argentina strongly CONDEMN the unilateral violation of the ceasefire by the Moroccan monarchy, caused by its armed military outbreak against the Saharawi people in the Guergarat area.

This violation represents a rupture and an irreversible violation of the ceasefire signed in 1991 between the Polisario Front and Morocco, whose sole responsibility lies with Morocco.

We also condemn the inaction of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara, MINURSO, and its complicity with Morocco, departing definitively from its only objective, which is to hold a referendum on self-determination in Western Sahara.

The serious events that have occurred and that have generated the legitimate self-defense of the Saharawi Army of the SADR under the leadership of the Polisario Front, which will take place from now on, will therefore be the sole responsibility of Morocco.

The SADR government and the Saharawi people have a legitimate right to defend their territory and their citizens.

Consequently, we demand:

  • That the Moroccan occupation forces immediately abandon the area and return to compliance with the ceasefire agreements signed in 1991.
  • Urgent UN and MINURSO intervention in the area to enforce the peace agreement and the ceasefire between both parties.
  • We urge the people of Chile and Argentina, their institutions, the progressive peoples and governments of Latin America and the Caribbean to actively reject the violation of the ceasefire and the Moroccan aggression against the Saharawi people.
  • It is urgent to guarantee the end of the Moroccan aggression and the respect for the ceasefire agreements and the holding of the referendum of self-determination of the Saharawi people.
