On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, on December 10, a hundred Sahrawis, accompanied by the solidarity movement and sympathizers of the Saharawi cause, addressed the occupant of their land, “Morocco out of Western Sahara”, without forgetting who gave their country to the invader, “Guilty Morocco, responsible Spain.”
Men and women did not stop shouting “long live the struggle of the Saharawi people”, since now they are at war and there is “neither calm nor peace, we return to arms”; they insisted that the “Polisario will win”, while they addressed the President of the Spanish Government: “Sánchez, listen, the Sahara is not for sale.”
In a statement from the State Coordinator of Solidarity Associations with the Sahara (CEAS-Sahara) and the Federation of the Community of Madrid of Solidarity Associations with the Sahara (FEMAS) read at the concentration, consternation and concern were expressed about the serious situation that the Sahrawi people is going through, at war due to the violation by the Moroccan regime of the ceasefire signed between Morocco and the Polisario Front, which contemplates the holding of a referendum on self-determination that Morocco obstructs.
CEAS and FEMAS denounced the passivity of the UN and its peacekeeping mission, MINURSO, as well as the complicit silence of some permanent members of the Security Council, in response to which they demanded the Spanish Government to get involved in order to achieve a solution that respects the Right to self-determination of the Saharawi people, as Spain is “directly responsible for the unleashing of this conflict, the result of its precipitous and shameful withdrawal from its colony and the signing of the ignominious and illegal Tripartite Agreement of Madrid in 1975”.
On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, the solidarity movement demanded the release of the Saharawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons, the clarification of the whereabouts of the more than 600 Sahrawi disappeared by the Moroccan feudal regime, and condemned the atrocities committed by the Moroccan repressive forces against the Saharawi population in the Occupied Territories, “all this with a hermetic closure of the territory to the international media, independent observers and human rights organizations.”
They called for the involvement of the UN and the International Community to pressure Morocco and that MINURSO be given a mandate to monitor and report on human rights violations in Western Sahara “as an immediate measure to protect the Sahrawi civilian population. , that since hostilities have resumed has suffered an unprecedented escalation of repression ”.
The actor Pepe Viyuela, for his part, denounced the “information blackout” in Spain about Western Sahara and said that if there were no more people there it was because of that silence. “The Sahrawis are human beings and the Government has abandoned them to their fate, it is shameful,” he said.
