Algeria calls its ambassador for consultations after the Spanish government’s change of position in relation to Western Sahara

Algeria has decided to call its ambassador in Madrid for consultations, with immediate effect, following statements by the highest Spanish authorities that constitute a “sudden change of position” on the issue of Western Sahara, according to a statement released Saturday by the ministry. of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad.

“Very surprised by the statements of the highest Spanish authorities on the issue of Western Sahara, the Algerian authorities, surprised by this sudden change in position of the former administrative power of Western Sahara, decided to call their ambassador in Madrid for consultations”, said the communicated.

In Algiers, Madrid’s decision to align itself with the Moroccan theses is perceived as a betrayal of the Saharawi people who are fighting for their independence. This act is a “second historic betrayal of the Saharawi people on the part of Madrid after the disastrous agreement of 1975”
