Western Sahara: Spanish president of the Government “contrary to international legality”

MADRID –  APS.dz .- Spanish trade unions and workers’ committees have strongly condemned the position expressed by the Spanish President of the Government , Pedro Sanchez on Western Sahara, calling it “contrary” to international legality and a “clear detachment” from Madrid’s commitments to this occupied territory.

Expressing their solidarity with the Sahrawi people through press releases and letters addressed to the General Union of Sahrawi Workers of Sakiet El-Hamra and Ouad-Edhahab (UGTSARIO), these unions have condemned the position of the Spanish Prime Minister which reflects Madrid’s “flagrant renunciation of its historical, political, moral and human commitments in the occupied territories which, in the eyes of international legality, remains under the responsibility of Spain until the Sahrawi people can access their rights namely, self-determination and independence”.

In this wake, the Spanish trade union sections expressed their “concern” about this “turnaround and this position contrary to the resolutions and requirements of international legality, a position inconsistent with the Spanish popular positions pleading in favor of the Sahrawis”.

Many organizations including USO, AIG, Confederacion Intersindical and Comisiones Obreras have underlined, through their reactions to this “abrupt and thoughtless” Spanish step, that it is a position that opposes moves to correct wrongs committed in the former Spanish colony”.

According to these organizations, efforts should be directed towards “the final, just and urgent settlement of this conflict which has persisted due to the failure of successive Spanish governments to fulfill their responsibilities”.

“The position of the current Government is likely to aggravate the situation and will further fuel the tension. Madrid has thus derailed from the path of international legality”, said the Spanish trade union sections who expressed the wish to see their country fully assume the role assigned to it.
