Sultana Khaya received in the 1st Committee of the Portuguese Assembly

PUSL.- Yesterday the Saharawi activist Sultana Khaya was received by the Committee of Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees of the Portuguese Parliament.

This hearing is part of a wide-ranging programme during Sultana Khaya’s stay in Portugal at the invitation of the Democratic Movement of Women.

During the hearing, Sultana Khaya exposed her personal experience as a victim of serious human rights violations to which she and her family were exposed during one year and seven months of arbitrary house arrest in Boujdour in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.

She denounced the grave situation experienced by her people under illegal Moroccan occupation and appealed to the various parliamentarians present for Portugal to take a more active role in the international arena.

Regina Marques from the Democratic Movement of Women reinforced the demand, pointing out that it is not only a question of humanitarian or human rights, but also a political question and that it is urgent to reach a lasting solution for the Saharawi people in order to achieve self-determination and an end to colonisation in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations.

The various parliamentarians present took note of the worrying situation in the occupied territories of Western Sahara and reaffirmed their solidarity.
