cineclubefaro.pt.- On 14 November at 21.00 hrs at the Cine Club de Farov the documentary “Life is Waiting: referendum and resistance in Western Sahara” will be screened.
More than forty years after the promise of freedom following the departure of the Spanish, Western Sahara remains the last colony of Africa. A UN-brokered ceasefire ended armed conflict in 1991, but the population continues to live under occupation by Moroccan forces and peace in the region is fragile. Tens of thousands have fled to Algeria and are living in refugee camps that were supposed to be temporary. Despite the difficulties, a new movement, with young people at the heart of the action, is emerging to question the abuse of human rights and demand the promised referendum on self-determination.
Life is Waiting is a documentary that tells the conflict from a non-violent perspective, focusing especially on art as a tool of resistance (activism), showing how the Sahrawi people use the peaceful path to give visibility to the conflict.
