PUSL.- On 14 November the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) organised several solidarity initiatives with the Saharawi people in the Algarve, in the presence of Omar Mih, Polisario Front representative in Portugal.

In partnership with the municipality of Loulé and the Teachers’ Union of the Southern Region (SPZS), a talk was given to over 200 students at Loulé Secondary School, followed by a conference with representatives of trade unions in the Algarve, which included a cultural moment provided by the artist Luís Galrito.

At the end of the day, in partnership with the Faro Cineclub, the film “Life is Waiting” was screened. This was part of FiSahara – an international film festival which takes place every year in the Saharawi refugee camps in Algeria.

In all these sessions, part of education and culture for peace, the situation of the Saharawi people was described, the conditions in which they have lived and resisted for nearly 50 years, and an appeal was made for solidarity and recognition of their right to self-determination. After the showing of the film there was time for debate with those present.

The CPPC reaffirmed the need for an end to the repression by the Moroccan authorities of the Saharawi population in the illegally occupied territories; the release of Saharawi political prisoners held in Moroccan prisons; and the immediate realisation of the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination!
