Western Sahara: NGO calls for freeze on war materials to Morocco

NEW YORK – APS.dz.- The New York Support Group for the Independence of Western Sahara has called on all countries to “freeze shipments of war materials” to Morocco until a UN-sponsored self-determination referendum is held in Western Sahara.

In a statement, the New York Support Group, which comprises more than 300 member organisations from around the world, reiterates its call on all states to “freeze all deliveries of war materials to the Kingdom of Morocco until a free and democratic referendum for self-determination of the Saharawi people is held in Western Sahara, under the auspices of the United Nations”.

In the same document, the members of the group call on UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to “guide the United Nations to assume its primary responsibility for the protection of the Sahrawi people living under occupation and for the decolonisation process of the Non-Self-Governing Territory of Western Sahara, which will contribute to strengthening peace, security and sustainable development in the region”.

In this context, they denounce the “inaction” of the United Nations in the face of the situation prevailing in Western Sahara, occupied by Morocco since 1975.

The New York Support Group also criticises the UN Secretary General for not having qualified the facts he reported in his last report, based on the principles and spirit of the UN Charter and in accordance with the principles of international law relating to non-self-governing territories.
