Law Faculty in Lisbon (Portugal) welcomed Saharawi representative to talk about International Law

Sidi Omar, Polisario Front representative at the United Nations in New York presented the case of Western Sahara under the light of international law yesterday at the Faculty of Law in Lisbon, Portugal.

An event well attended by students of law and social sciences, as well as embassies, student associations, political parties and organisations from various sectors of Portuguese society.

The debate following Prof. Omar’s speech was lively and well attended.

In reply to a question on the proposal by Morocco of an autonomy plan as the only possible solution for Western Sahara, the Saharawi professor and diplomat explained the illegality of the proposal which, respecting international law, is neither viable nor legal and therefore not credible.

It is a unilateral plan where the Saharawi people and its legitimate representative are never mentioned and which does not allow the Saharawi people to choose another solution. It has no validity under international law establishing the right to self-determination and nothing to make a possible vote better or fairer than the one prepared over years of work by the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara.

This conference was organised by IURIS (Interdisciplinary Research Institute of the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon), APDJ (Portuguese Association of Democrat Lawyers) and the Centre for African Studies of the University of Porto.

The recording of the conference will soon be available on the online platforms.
