PUSL.- The Association of Solidarity and Self-Determination of the Saharawi People – ASAARAUI, held a demonstration this morning outside the hotel where President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is staying, demanding from the new government, the recognition of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic as a free and sovereign nation, while demanding the immediate return to the Saharawi people of all the territories occupied militarily by the Kingdom of Morocco.
Brazil has not yet recognised the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, unlike many Latin American states which have longstanding diplomatic relations with Western Sahara.
During Bolsonaro’s government, Brazil has intensified its relations with Morocco, notably in trade related to the “blood phosphates” looted in the Sahrawi territories occupied by Morocco.
It is hoped that the Lula government will respect international law and the legitimate rights of the Saharawi people to self-determination.
