Addis Ababa (SPS) – The Sahrawi Republic thwarted, Saturday in Addis Ababa, Morocco’s attempts to ascend to the summit office of the Assembly of Heads of State of the African Union, where Morocco submitted its candidacy to represent the North African region, in an attempt to influence the Sahrawi issue through its presence in the highest continental body, the summit office of presidents, according to diplomatic sources.
To counter the Moroccan plan, the Sahrawi Republic ran as a representative of the region in the summit office, as its candidacy constituted a strong barrier against Morocco’s plans aimed at negatively influencing the African position in support of the right of the Sahrawi people to freedom and independence, the same sources added.
It is noteworthy that Morocco’s candidacy for the office of the Summit of the Presidents of the African Union is the latest missteps of the Moroccan regime, which failed miserably thanks to the vigilance of Sahrawi diplomacy, which deposited its candidacy for the same post to waste the dreams of Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, who will return to Rabat trying to justify the failure of the Moroccan plan to obtain a seat in the body.
The Moroccan plan comes in light of “desperate” attempts and “malicious” plans that Morocco has been pursuing since its accession to the African Union in 2017, after an African isolation of nearly 34 years, to expel the Sahrawi Republic from every African forum or body, but all its attempts were met with a strong response from the Sahrawi diplomacy.
