On 24 March, the PUSL sent a letter to the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Joseph Borrell, drawing attention to the situation of the Saharawi political prisoner, Houssein Amaadour.
In the letter, we ask the High Representative/Vice-President, Josep Borrell, to act in accordance with the declarations made on 18 January this year, in which he said that ‘respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms underpins the strong and strategic partnership which the European Union has built with Morocco over time, and which we are committed to developing further’, and consequently to remind the Kingdom of Morocco that this should be the basis of the relationship between it and the EU. In this case, this means respect for the UN’s Nelson Mandela standards and the transfer to a prison closer to the family of Saharawi political prisoner Amaadour.
We have received a reply to this letter today (attached at the end of the text).
From the PUSL we thank you for the reply. A reply full of fine words but which unfortunately does not answer any of the points raised in the letter. The EU Delegation in Rabat does not have to consult the Moroccan National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) which has shown from the outset to be nothing more than a propaganda mechanism and without any kind of action in defence of human rights, as can be seen in the absolute silence of the CNDH in relation to the decisions of the CAT (United Nations Committee against Torture).
PUSL would like to receive a response with rigour and commitment to the principles announced by Mr Borrell and not a marketing statement empty of content and we will inform you of this.
