Statement by Taleb Ali Salem to the C-24 of the United Nations

Thank you very much Madam President.

I wonder if you are aware that at this moment when we are gathered here in New York, thousands of people are suffering the consequences of a brutal Moroccan occupation in Western Sahara.

I wonder if you are aware that at this very moment there is a people who have been refugees in the middle of the desert for 47 years, waiting for a decolonisation that you promised but never delivered.

Until when will this United Nations organisation continue to speak in the name of the people and be an accomplice to the massacre of the people?

Until when will the Charter of Human Rights and international legality continue to be used by the great powers to justify their wars when they have interests, and to cover up their miseries when it is not in their interests?

How long will Spanish governments continue to evade their legal responsibility to decolonise Western Sahara?

Until when will the Sahrawi people be allowed to continue suffering the consequences of a brutal Moroccan occupation?

Until when will the Saharawi people continue to count the years, count the betrayals and count your resolutions on paper… until when will we continue to count our victims, while you watch in silence, complicit in the massacre?

Today I shed my prejudices.
I am getting rid of my Sahrawi refugee positions, I am getting rid of my rage and my anger, to tell you here, that your credibility as a United Nations organisation depends on only one thing.

Your credibility, gentlemen, depends on carrying out the justice that you preach so much, on carrying out the aspirations of an oppressed people, on carrying out the decolonisation of the last colony in Africa, Western Sahara.

I am here today to deliver an important message to you, in my name, in the name of the Saharawi youth, in the name of the Saharawi civil society and in the name of the oppressed people.

I am here to tell you that the world cannot be allowed to drift into chaos, the illegal occupation cannot be allowed, the violation of human rights cannot be allowed, the plundering of natural resources cannot be allowed, but above all, I am here to tell you that the hypocrisy and double standards to which you have accustomed us as oppressed peoples cannot be allowed.

It is my obligation and my duty to demand here today that the UN Security Council resolutions calling for the decolonisation of Western Sahara be complied with. It is my duty to demand justice for the Saharawi people and for all oppressed peoples.

It is also my duty to let you know that you are and will be responsible for all the deaths, misfortunes and insecurity that threaten North Africa, because the Saharawi people are determined to gain their independence over their legitimate territory of Western Sahara and they will achieve it with or without you.

Thank you very much.
