New York (United States), 20 September 2023 (SPS) – The President of the Republic of Algeria, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, expressed Algeria’s firm position to achieve a definitive resolution of the question of the last African territory under colonial rule.
In his speech during the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, he pointed out that “the entire population of Western Sahara is still deprived of its right to self-determination through a free and fair referendum, in line with the joint UN-African Union resolution plan adopted by the Security Council and accepted by the parties, POLISARIO Front and Morocco, in 1991”.
The Algerian president urged the UN to do its duty in the face of “attempts to legitimise the illegitimate” and to defend the credibility of its resolutions. He reaffirmed Algeria’s support for the UN’s efforts to facilitate direct negotiations between the parties to the conflict for the organisation of a referendum to determine the future of the Saharawi people.
Abdelmadjid Tebboune also reiterated Algeria’s firm position in support of just causes and in solidarity with oppressed peoples fighting for their liberation, including Palestinian issues.
