New York (PUSL) — The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution to renew the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).
Resolution 2703 renews MINURSO’s mandate for another year, until 31 October 2024. The resolution was supported by 13 of the 15 members of the Security Council. Russia and Mozambique abstained.
The resolution emphasises the need to build on the commitment to achieve a realistic, feasible, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the question of Western Sahara, as well as the importance of aligning MINURSO’s strategic orientations and UN resources with this objective.
The Security Council calls on the parties concerned to show good faith and resume negotiations without preconditions, under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General, with a view to reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution that will allow for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.
The resolution also underlines the importance of the parties involved renewing their commitment to advancing the political process with a view to new negotiations, encourages neighbouring countries to contribute to this process and stresses the importance of all parties broadening their positions in order to reach a solution.
