CEBRAPAZ embraces the Saharawi People’s Struggle for Independence

CEBRAPAZ -Motion in defence of the independence of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic

The 6th National Assembly of Cebrapaz (Brazilian Centre for Solidarity with Peoples and Struggle for Peace), meeting on December 10 in São Paulo, expresses its irreducible solidarity with the Saharawi people in their just struggle for national liberation. Three years on from taking up arms again to confront the occupying and colonising regime in Morocco, the Sahrawi people remain steadfast in demanding their right to self-determination and in defending the independence of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).

We welcome the commitment and determination of the legitimate representative of this brave people, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Saguía el Hamra and the River of Gold (Polisario). For the same reason, we repudiate the attempts by allies of the Kingdom of Morocco to silence this struggle and relativise the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination with the rhetoric of concessions that are always painful for the Saharawis, who are asked to commit to negotiations around an autonomy plan presented by the occupier.

Western Sahara has been pending decolonisation since the 1960s. Abandoned by the colonial power, Spain, invaded and occupied by Morocco, the territory still has a people who are resistant and persistent in their desire for freedom.

For this reason, Morocco has established a regime of total oppression based on the systematic violation of the Saharawis’ human rights and the plundering of their resources, while hundreds of thousands of their compatriots have been resisting in the desert, in refugee camps, for more than four decades – not just waiting for the promise of self-determination to be fulfilled, but already practising it by building their state institutions and an emancipated society.

All the Moroccan regime’s allies and accomplices, such as Spain and France and, in general, the European Union, are responsible for the occupation and the booty, in their quest to secure their neo-colonial policies for the North African region. The Sahrawi people and SADR are not submitting to the imperialist agenda for Africa, nor are they surrendering their right to the dynamics of international exploitation.
That is why

– We demand an end to all trade agreements with Morocco that move resources and products from Western Sahara;
– We demand the release of all Saharawi prisoners and the return of or information about all those who have disappeared;
– We call on the UN, and especially the countries that still prevent it, to monitor the situation and protect the human rights of the Saharawis in the occupied territory;
– We support the Sahrawi call for the recognition of the independence of SADR and the immediate withdrawal of Morocco from Western Sahara.

For an independent SADR and a Free Sahara, now!
