A Grave Betrayal of Mandela’s Legacy: Outrage Over the Nomination of Amina Bouayach

The nomination of Amina Bouayach, President of Morocco’s National Human Rights Council (CNDH), for the 2025 United Nations Nelson Mandela Prize has ignited widespread condemnation from Sahrawi and Riffian communities, as well as numerous human rights organizations across Africa, Europe, and Latin America.

Bouayach’s tenure at the CNDH has been marked by allegations of complicity in human rights violations, particularly concerning the Sahrawi people and the Riffian movement. Critics argue that under her leadership, the CNDH has failed to address or acknowledge the systemic abuses perpetrated by Moroccan authorities, including arbitrary arrests, torture, and suppression of dissent.

The Sahrawi Human Rights Commission (CONASADH) has issued a strong statement denouncing Bouayach’s nomination, labeling it a ‘political dishonor’ and an affront to the legacy of Nelson Mandela, who was a staunch supporter of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. They emphasize that honoring a representative of a regime accused of ongoing occupation and repression contradicts the very principles Mandela stood for.

Similarly, the Sahrawi National Council (CNS) has expressed indignation, accusing Bouayach of being a facade for Morocco’s oppressive policies rather than a genuine human rights advocate. They highlight her consistent defense of Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara and her denial of the existence of political prisoners, despite international reports to the contrary.

The Riffian movement, known as Hirak al-Rif, which emerged in response to socio-economic marginalization and state repression in Morocco’s Rif region, also opposes Bouayach’s nomination. Activists point to her silence and inaction regarding the crackdown on Riffian protesters and the imprisonment of movement leaders.

The collective outcry underscores a broader concern: that awarding Bouayach the Nelson Mandela Prize would not only misrepresent her record but also undermine the credibility of the award itself. Nelson Mandela’s legacy is one of resistance against oppression and unwavering support for human rights-a legacy that many believe is incompatible with Bouayach’s actions and affiliations.

In light of these objections, numerous organizations and activists urge the United Nations to reconsider the nomination, emphasizing the importance of aligning the award’s recipients with the values and principles that Nelson Mandela championed throughout his life.
