PUSL.- On May 20, 1973, only ten days after its foundation, the Polisario Front carried out its first armed action against Spanish colonialism. The target was the police station of El Janga.
This action was the first that marked the beginning of the war of liberation and quickly surpassed Spain’s ability to respond and its control over the Saharawi territory.
The following actions strengthened the prestige of the Polisario Front not only vis-à-vis the Saharawi population but also among the Saharawis who served in the Spanish colonial army.
History is known, Spain sold the territory and its inhabitants as if they were a herd of goats to Morocco and Mauritania, yielding this extremely rich country in the Madrid agreements, in an illegal and criminal way.
Then followed the bombing of the Saharawi population with Napalm and White Phosphorus, the Black March (called the Green by the Moroccans), thousands of dead, tortured, disappeared and a war of resistance and valor of the Saharawi until 1991, when the cease-fire was signed. Read more
Frente Polisario – Historical background and foundation of Frente POLISARIO
umdraiga.com.- The socioeconomic changes that took place in the Spanish Sahara during the 60’s of the last century, led to the emergence of modern Sahrawi nationalism, based on national consciousness and not on tribalism; based on political arguments and not religious feelings.
In the first years of that decade, the nationalists formed diverse political groupings but none of them got to have decisive influence on the population. Only in 1967, an intellectual, Mohamed Sidi Ibrahim “Bassiri”, was able to gather around him a handful of supporters of independence and, the following year, he founded the Movement for the Liberation of the Sahara, (MLS).
In short, this clandestine organization already had hundreds of militants and began to influence the Saharawi population. Read more
Press release of the Frente POLISARIO:
[GENEVA, 22 MARCH 2019] Today the Frente POLISARIO concluded the second UN-led roundtable on Western Sahara. We participated in these talks constructively and without pre-conditions with an aim towards fulfilling our people’s inalienable right to self-determination and Independence.
It is clear that the only practicable, realistic and enduring solution is one that grants our people their right to freely and democratically decide their own fate, without preconditions. Only with the approval of the Sahrawi people can a solution be enduring and foster a genuine peace that paves the way for a free, prosperous, and democratic Western Sahara, which will contribute to regional peace, stability, security and Integration.
The Frente POLISARIO remains committed to a peaceful, genuine solution, and we welcome the steadfast efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy and urge the international community to fully support him. But we are under no Illusions about the obstacles to peace. Western Sahara remains under Morocco’s illegal, repressive occupation, which systematically violates the human rights of the Sahrawi people. This basic reality cannot be ignored; self-determination is incompatible with occupation. Read more
PUSL – [BRUSSELS, JANUARY 23] The European Parliament’s Fisheries Committee approved today the EU-Morocco fisheries agreement which includes the maritime area of Western Sahara. The Commission in no way respects the judgment of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) of February 2018, in which it is explicit that such an agreement could not be applied to Western Sahara. The agreement was approved with 17 votes in favor, 7 against and 2 abstentions.
Parliament’s Plenary (all MEPs) will have to make the final vote on 13 February.
Following the disastrous vote on the EU / Morocco trade agreement, which also violates the CJEU rulings, there seems to be no intention of European politicians to respect international law or it’s own court. Read more

PUSL.- The Polisario Front sent a letter to the President of the United Nations Security Council (CS) with his comments on the report of António Guterres, UN Secretary-General (see here) presented to CS members on 3 October.
The report sent to the SC by the Secretary-General (SG) is intended for discussion prior to the meeting at the end of the month in which the extension of the mandate of MINURSO (United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) will be decided. In the letter, the Polisario Front reaffirms its readiness to resume negotiations in accordance with United Nations resolutions but points out some concerns regarding the points of the Secretary-General’s report regarding the credibility of impartiality and independence of MINURSO and of the UN itself.
The Polisario Front explains in the letter that it is necessary to analyze the underlying causes of the Guergarat crisis that have implications for the existing military agreements and the political process.
They also highlight the concern about illegal attempts to “normalize the situation” of the Moroccan military occupation of the occupied territories of Western Sahara. They also address the issue of meetings with the MINURSO Head in any place within the Mission’s defined area of action.
As PUSL has published, there is a concern on the part of Horst Koehler, SG Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, with the “development” and “investments” of the Occupied Territories which is disconcerting in the face of the real situation in this non-autonomous territory and the serious violations of human rights. Mohamed Khadad, head of the Polisario Front’s external relations with MINURSO, warned today that if the decision of the European Court of Justice is not respected and a final agreement is reached, fishing vessels in the Canaries will be prohibited from exploiting fishing resources in the waters of Western Sahara.
“Fishing in the waters of Western Sahara is a tradition of the Canaries, we respect and want them to continue, but we can not accept that Morocco is negotiating and benefiting from the exploitation of resources,” Mohamed Khadad said in a press conference today.
Khadad also recalled that the Polisario Front will be open from today on to open negotiations and agreements within the legal framework defined by the Court of Justice of the European Union for the continuation of fishing in Saharawi waters.
For his part, Polisario Front lawyer Gilles Devers recalled that the aim of the movement is the liberation of the Saharawi territory, and stressed the need for governments not to turn this case into an economic issue of “simple” fishing rights. Read more
