The Progressive Union of Prosecutors (UPF) has warned that the demand to decolonise Western Sahara through a referendum of self-determination must be fulfilled, as stated in international law and various resolutions of the United Nations (UN).
This it urges in a message published on Twitter, in which he recalls the conclusion of support for the Sahara that he approved at the congress in October 2021.
“… Debe cumplirse con el derecho internacional q exige la descolonización del Sáhara Occidental a través del referéndum de autodeterminación sancionado por la ONU…”

The UPF then addressed the judgment of the General Court of the European Union (GC of the EU) declaring the nullity of the EU fisheries agreement with Morocco because it included “the exploitation of the resources of Western Sahara that do not belong to Morocco”, and “as an administering power and of all Community institutions,
The UPF stressed then and reiterates again that “international law must be complied with, which demands the decolonisation of Western Sahara through the UN-sanctioned referendum of self-determination”.
He reacted in this way after the publication of a letter to King Mohammed VI in which the government said that “Spain considers the Moroccan autonomy initiative, presented in 2007, to be the most serious, credible and realistic basis for the resolution of this dispute”.
This plan, which would be submitted to a prior referendum, envisages certain competences in the areas of economy, infrastructure, social development and culture, among others, for the former Spanish colony, while reserving key areas such as defence, foreign relations and religion, which are specifically under the control of King Mohammed VI.
The recognition of the Moroccan autonomy plan as a possible solution has been automatically criticised by the Polisario Front, whose delegate in Spain, Abdulah Arabi, has reproached them for not having been warned beforehand of this turn of events. In his opinion, the President of the Government “succumbs to pressure and blackmail” from Morocco by endorsing this plan as a “toll” to resume the damaged political and diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Criticism has also come from the coalition government partners and other parliamentary groups.
