In view of the situation created after the communication by the Moroccan government of a letter from the President of Spain (letter unknown to us), the General Union of Workers, UGT (Spain), declares:
1) In addition to the long years of struggle of the Saharawi people, 47 years later, generation after generation sees the same situation as at the beginning of the conflict. Tens of thousands of Saharawi refugees in camps in Algeria, and the colonization by Morocco of the former Spanish colony. This is a fact that cannot be ignored by the international community, which is why it is necessary to find, within the framework of the United Nations, a solution to this conflict, and above all to the situation of the Saharawis outside their country.
2) Without knowing the exact terms of the letter, UGT wants to remind the Government of the commitments it, like the Kingdom of Spain, has acquired internationally in agreement with the United Nations and the international community, which should lead to a referendum in which the Saharawi people decide your future.
3) In this regard, we demand from the Government of Spain that any different position be produced after an internal debate and a necessary national consensus, on an issue that generates so many feelings in Spanish society.
4) Finally, we reaffirm that the solution to the conflict lies in United Nations resolutions within the framework of a multilateral agreement.
