PRESS RELEASE AFASPA
Spain dishonors itself for the second time
For the second time in its history, Spain abandons its international obligations towards the people of Western Sahara, a non-autonomous territory that it colonized for ninety-one years.
In 1975 it was dictator Franco’s Spain that signed secret agreements illegally ceding its colony to Morocco and Mauritania.
In 2022, it is Spain ruled by the socialist Pedro Sanchez that disrespects international law, without consulting the various components of the coalition, with an announcement that endorses the confiscation of the Saharawi people of their imprescriptible and inalienable right to self-determination.
This adherence to the unilateral stance that Morocco has adopted for several decades, which blocks the Peace Plan signed in 1991, is nothing more than submission to the immigration blackmail exercised by the Sherifian kingdom and clearly claimed by the latter, in order to obtain from European countries in particular , a denial of international law to resolve this unfinished decolonization conflict.
The close ties that have been established for more than 130 years between the peoples of Spain and Western Sahara should make it possible to force the Spanish government to assume its obligations as the administrative power of the last non-autonomous territory of Africa and put an end to a situation of war in the Maghreb which has lasted almost fifty years.
Peoples’ rights cannot be applied in variable geometry at a time when the resolution of conflicts in the Middle East, Europe and Africa requires compliance with UN and African Union resolutions and, in the case of Western Sahara, in the opinion of the International Court of Justice in The Hague. In this regard, the European Union and its Commission must respect the decisions of the European Court of Justice, and stop concluding criminal economic agreements with Morocco.
