(SPS) The work of the Fifth Congress of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) concluded yesterday, Tuesday, in the Australian city of Melbourne, with the reaffirmation in its final communiqué of its support for the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination.
The ITUC Congress, which was held from 17-22 November, adopted its final communiqué, which included a paragraph devoted to the Saharawi question, in which it stated that “the International Trade Union Confederation supports the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and denounces the suffering to which this people is subjected at the hands of the Moroccan occupation”.
During her closing speech, the outgoing Secretary General of the trade union federation, Mrs. Sharan Burrow, underlined that “nobody should forget the occupation of Western Sahara and the reality of occupation that the Saharawi people live daily”.
The 5th ITUC Congress elected Mr Luca Visentini, as the new Secretary General of the Federation, as well as a new executive council and new structures to manage the work of the organisation until the next congress.
It should be noted that the conference was attended by more than a thousand delegates from 168 countries representing 322 international trade unions. The International Trade Union Confederation, the world’s largest trade union federation, was formed on 1 November 2006 following a merger between the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and the World Confederation of Trade Unions.
