BRUSSELS – APS.dz.- The European Commission reaffirmed its support for the efforts of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to achieve “a just and lasting political solution in Western Sahara, based on the right to self-determination in accordance with the resolutions and principles of the Charter of the United Nations” .
In a written reply (dated 11 March) to a question by a member of the European People’s Party group, the MEP Massimiliano Salini, the Commission assured that the EU’s position on Western Sahara is dictated by the resolutions of the Security Council of the UN, underlining its status as a non-autonomous territory.
“The EU reiterates its support for the efforts of the UN Secretary General to reach a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution, which guarantees the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara within the framework of respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter”said the Commission.
Recalling that an appeal was lodged on 14 December 2021 following the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union of 29 September of the same year to annul the trade agreements concluded between the EU and Morocco and including occupied Western Sahara, the Commission stated that the implementation of these agreements will depend, in future, on the final decision of the Court of Justice.
“Member States are also aware of this and have informed their respective operators of the procedure envisaged immediately after the court’s decision,” he added.
