Faced with the decision of the Spanish government to assume Morocco’s position of not respecting the right to self-determination of the Saharawi people, the BNG states:
- That the Spanish government’s position is a betrayal of the Saharawi people, it is yielding to the interests of Morocco and it goes against all agreements adopted so far by international institutions, which have unanimously proposed themselves in favor of the right of the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination , through a referendum among its population.
- That the Spanish government’s position means legitimizing the occupation by Morocco, the repression, the violations of human rights and the theft of the wealth existing in the Saharawi territory. It also shows that the Spanish government’s foreign policy is clearly aligned with the positions of the US and Israel, two states known for their imperialist policy of aggression against other peoples and support for anti-democratic regimes such as the Moroccan monarchy.
- This decision exacerbates the tense situation in a region where the provocation by Morocco, in November 2020, led to the resumption of war between the Saharawi and Moroccan armies.
That this position implies the assumption of part and, therefore, prevents the Spanish State from playing a role in the decolonization process, based on the United Nations Charter and the decolonization agreements of the last existing colony on the African continent. - That this decision is an exercise in unacceptable cynicism, since while demanding sovereignty for Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion, they deny that right to Western Sahara and the Saharawi people; placing economic and geostrategic interests above the rights of peoples and respect for human rights.
- The BNG demands that the Spanish government correct its position and consequently defend the right of the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination through a referendum.
The BNG once again shows its strong support to the Saharawi people, and to their only and legitimate representative, the Polisario Front, in their struggle against the military occupation and for the full exercise of the right to self-determination and independence.
